I hated the hospital.
My sister Yaesom sick typhoid and had to be treated for
about 15 days. This is the third day I was with her and I really could not
enjoy my day because of this. My parents are too busy to accompany her here, so
they asked me to accompany Yaesom until
late afternoon. They even promised that they would allow me to go abroad and
financed them if I wanted to accompany her.
It's been 3 days, every school, I immediately went to the
hospital to keep Yaesom who was aged 15 it. Actually I had to do it all. Yaesom
sucks. She's old enough to fend for them selves. Fortunately, I do not have to
stay there.
My sister's room was room number 19, next door to room
number 20. For 3 days I was here, I always have false one entered the room,
although on her doorstep was printed the number "19" and
"20". In room 20, there was a girl my age. And every time I
accidentally entered the room, she always looks was knitting something. She
looks healthy. But what makes living in this hospital? If I were her, I would
not stay here. I do not like hospitals.
Today it is the 4th day my sister treated. After school, I
went straight to the hospital where she is. In the halls of the hospital, I met
a girl whose room number 20. She was sitting knitting. I want to meet her. I'm
sure she knew me, because I've been 3 times one false enters the room.
I went over and stood right in front of her. She initially
looked down, immediately looked up, toward my face. She did not look surprised,
instead she smiled sweetly at me.
"I often see you," she said, "I Seulhwa, nice
to meet you."
Seulhwa. A beautiful name. The meaning of the name is
"beautiful". And sure enough, her name is appropriate to smile
genuinely innocent.
"I Gong Chan Shik," I introduced myself, "So,
what are you doing here? I often to see you knit. "
“Soon winter. I want
to make a scarf for a friend of mine” she said, still knitting
“How long have you in here?” I asked her. She really made
me curious. She wears a dress of patients, but she could get out of her room
and she was not infused.
“Chronic renal failure stage II. maybe less than 2 months
...” she replied, "not as bad as acute renal failure. But I have to be
treated"
I can not say anything. Obviously I feel bad. I tried to
change the subject by asking things that are not important to her.
“to who you made the
scarf?” I asked her. This time I was no longer standing in front of her, I was
sitting right next to Seulhwa while viewing knit.
“Gong Chan Shik,” Seulhwa replied with a smile.
I'm a bit laughing because I could not believe what I just
heard, “But you already started knit before my sister to stay here right? And I
just see you now”
“Oh, the scarf that
was already done. I already give it to my mother. This scarf is knitting me to
make for you,” said Seulhwa, “although I do not know your name when I start
knitting, I already know that one day I will talk to you and know your name. I
hope I can finish it before you go home.”
“you are very kind,”
I told her. I was really amazed at Seulhwa. She was obviously ill and her only
condition was weak, but she was still able to make someone happy.
Suddenly a nurse call Seulhwa and told her to return to her
room. Of course I may not follow it to get there, so I went into the room
Yaesom, Seulhwa next room.
“You're lucky just to stay here for 15 days,” I said to
Yaesom, “girls in the next room…”
“have to stay here for a long time right?” I have not had
time to finish my words, Yaesom already cut, “Ki Seul Hwa, 18 years, chronic
renal failure.”
“you… know?” I was shocked
to find that Yaesom already know about Seulhwa than me.
“Every night I often to look out of the room. And every time
I look out the room, I always see it. She was very kind, she and I chatting a
lot,” said Yaesom, “how can you know seulhwa?”
“I often come to the wrong room and ... yes, I met her,” I
explained to yaesom , “and I never saw her family here.”
Yaesom told me that parents Seulhwa very busy, like our
parents, and she was an only child. Yaesom I still have to look at the
situation, but Seulhwa alone. Actually, Seulhwa was old enough to fend for
themselves. But why the parents are more concerned with business than children
who feel bored in the hospital?
The next day at school, I told him about Seulhwa my best
friend, Jinyoung. I asked for suggestions on Jinyoung, what should I do to make
Seulhwa not feel bored in the hospital. I really wanted to cheer her up.
“So ... at the
hospital where my sister was treated, there was a girl our age the name
Seulhwa. She had been there quite a long time due to kidney failure. She must
have feel bored there because her friends rarely see,” I tell Jinyoung. I hoped
Jinyoung can help me , “I wanted to comfort her so she will not feel bored.
What should I do?”
“Bring a DVD and
watch with her? It will be fun,” Jinyoung gave me an idea . But I know that
it's not a good idea because it would be very disturbing. I asked Jinyoung to
think about other ideas.
“I'm serious,” I said, “she even knit a scarf for me.”
“Now, think about the things that are favored by women,”
Jinyoung suggest me , “flowers, chocolate, poetry, a lot!”
“Hey, that's not what
I meant,” I said, sighed. It was hard to talk to this person , “I mean, I
wanted to comfort him and make him feel good at the hospital. Is there an
activity our can do together to pass the time?”
Jinyoung looks like he was thinking, but I'm sure that there
are no interesting ideas that came into his mind.
“I have never been in
a situation like this. So, sorry, I cannot help you, " Jinyoung said to
me, then he left.
Later in the day, when I went to the hospital, I met again
with Seulhwa in the hospital hallways. She was not knitting, she looked like
was looking for someone.
“Hi,” I greeted her.
She greeted me with a smile behind a very wide on her face. I asked her who she
was looking for. She told me that her school friends plan to go visit her that
day. However, they did not come.
While waiting for her friends, and I were both talked
Seulhwa. I asked many Seulhwa, especially about her life before being in the
hospital.
“Do you want to see
the situation out there?” I asked her, “now autumn, lots of leaves falling of
leaves in the street.”
“of course I want to,”
answered Seulhwa, “but is it possible?”
Suddenly, an idea came to mind. I will make a video about
the situation outside. I wanted to showed her how great this fall. She must be
very happy.
“I can record the
situation out there and I will make it as if you are walking around there,” I
said to the spirit , “so you do not have to wonder anymore.”
“you are very kind,” Seulhwa said, laughed a little , “when
I recover later, maybe we could take a walk together outside.”
We talked about a lot of things until we saw two girls who
walk in the hallway. It definitely Seulhwa friends.
Seulhwa looks happy when she met his friends. This certainly
has been a long time since the last time she met them.
The two friends went to the place where I was sitting and
Seulhwa. They looked surprised when she met me.
“This Gongchan, my
friend,” Seulhwa introduced me to her friends. I shook hands with them , “Gongchan,
they are Hyunrin and nara, my best friend at school.”
Once acquainted with them, I go and leave them permission
because I did not want to disturb them.
I went back to the room, she was sleeping there. I was really
bored and wanted to return home, or go play soccer with Jinyoung. But on the
other hand, I do not want to leave this hospital. Not only because Yaesom, but
also because Seulhwa.
In the afternoon, Yaesom still asleep and I just keep myself
busy by playing with my phone. Suddenly, someone knocked on the door Yaesom. I
opened the door and saw Seulhwa there. She brings a music box that looks
familiar.
“Maybe we could talk
outside, I do not want us to wake Yaesom,” I said, pulled out gently Seulhwa ,
“I want to show you something,” Seulhwa replied, showed him
holding a music box.
Music box that looks familiar to me. Looks like I have never
had that kind of music box. But I feel ever had this music box.
Suddenly I remembered the incident 6 years ago.
Flashback
That afternoon, I was still in school with my friend,
Sandeul. The sky was overcast, a sign that it would rain. I do not want to get
soaked in the street, and my house is not so close to the school. Sandeul did
not want to linger in school because their parents must have been waiting for.
But I still want to wait at the school.
I walked alone in the school hallway. Corridors were
deserted and creepy. Should I go with Sandeul and wait for the rain at his
home. I thought, there was no one at all. Until that moment I saw a girl who is
sad on the bench corridor. Her head was bowed and her hair covering her face.
Though I could not see her face clearly, I knew that she was crying because she
was sobbing.
I approached her and pulled out my music box. It was a
gift I got for my birthday recently the 12th. Music box really made me happy. I
think, maybe if I give her the music box, she'll be happy.
Needless to say, I immediately put my music box beside
her, then walked away. Actually, I do not know who she was because I had never
even seen her face.

“I get this music box from someone at my old school. In the
afternoon, when everyone had gone home, I was sitting at school because it was
my last day there learning. I would change schools. Of course I'm sad because I
did not want to leave my friends. I sit alone in a corridor and cry there.
Until a child is giving me this music box. I do not know who child is, I do not
even know if child's a boy or a girl. To be sure, he's very good. Although I've
never talk to him at all,” Seulhwa explained. She then opened the music box and
it plays a song.
The song is very beautiful. No wonder I was so happy when
getting this music box. No mistake, the girl in the corridor it certainly is
Seulhwa, and she still had it until now.
“I'm really sad now,”
Seulhwa said, “the doctor told me I had to have surgery later that night,
because my situation worsens. I was so scared. Every time I'm sad, I always
listen to this music box. "
I was shocked to hear what she was saying. The operation is
the same as risking life and death. Either two, survive or fail.
“you'll be fine,” I
tried to calm Seulhwa, but it only made her cried.
“I was really scared. What if this surgery does not work? I
had not even finished the scarf that I made for you,” she said, cried
While this was like she was still thinking about the
happiness of others. Seulhwa too good for her illness.
“What time are you
going to undergo the operation?” I asked her.
“At 7 pm. This is too sudden ...”
At 7 tonight, it means 2 hours from now. I wanted to
accompany him until later, but I had to get home because I had to go to school
tomorrow.
“my parents will come
soon,” Seulhwa said, “If my surgery failed ... I want to give you this music
box because you've made me happy when I'm lonely in this hospital. This music
box completely eliminates the feeling of sadness.”
It's just the second day I knew Seulhwa, but she has me as a
friend. It makes me not want to let Seulhwa undergo operations. I want to be
with her.
“I have to go back,
see you later!” Seulhwa immediately left the room and returned to her room. I
wanted to follow her, but I was too helpless to stand. I'm too sad to know that
Seulhwa have surgery. It's too risky.
Yaesom suddenly woke up and saw me with a sad look. Yaesom
ask what happened, and I told her everything. Obviously, Yaesom surprised to
hear my story because Yaesom first to know Seulhwa than me.
“So tonight she will
have surgery ... So who will talk with me tonight?” Yaesom so sorry to hear
about Seulhwa.
I do not have to wait until later tonight Yaesom. I had to
leave. But today could be the last day I met Seulhwa.
Suddenly I remembered the math task that has not been done
by me. I really have to go home. I quickly went from room Yaesom. And unfortunately,
I forgot to say goodbye to home on Seulhwa.
That night, I slept uneasily. I continue to pray for
Seulhwa, and hopefully tomorrow I heard the good news that Seulhwa operations
running smoothly.
The next morning, I awoke to the sound of the alarm. I
immediately checked my phone and I got a text message from Yaesom. She said
that the operation Seulhwa was complete, but she is still in a coma.
At first, I wanted to mention this
to Jinyoung. But when I got to school, Jinyoung did not come that day.
After school, I immediately went to the hospital. After
arriving there, I rushed to the room and knocked on her doorSeulhwa, but it
seems like no one else there. Parents Seulhwa definitely in the emergency room
waiting for her.
So I went to Yaesom room and asked about Seulhwa. Yaesom was
crying, her eyes puffy. Without saying anything, Yaesom pointed to the table
next to them. There are a music box and a knitted scarf unresolved. At the time
and even then I knew that Seulhwa gone.
“Please do not tell
me that Seulhwa ...” I really can not talked anymore. In fact, without clear, I
already know everything.
I was out of the room, and asked the nurse to seek
explanation Seulhwa. When I find a nurse, she told me everything about Seulhwa.
“The surgery was
almost successful. But her coma and was too weak to wake up,” said the nurse, “She
was take home by her family.”
I can only hear what the silent sisters. I may not go to her
house and went to her funeral because I was not close relatives and family may
not knew me.
I went back to Yaesom room and asked where she Yaesom get
the music box and a scarf. Is the family or who gave it to Yaesom before
Seulhwa underwent surgery.
“Where do you get
this stuff?” I asked to Yaesom
“a nurse deliver to me,” answered Yaesom, “Seulhwa may have
left it before surgery.”
I can not do much at that time. I decided to get out of the
room and sat in a chair Yaesom in the halls of the hospital. The only thing I
can do is shut up and looked at the music box and a scarf that has not resolved
it. I opened the music box and a song is played. I think the music box can help
remove the feeling of woe. But not this time. I feel sad because Seulhwa still
left at the right time I can not really think.
I saw an unfinished scarf she knit. There was my name there.
Although not yet completed her shawl, she had already made my name on the
scarf. Gong Chan Shik.
A month passed. Yaesom was discharged from the hospital and
I get a ticket to go abroad, like what has been promised by my parents. But it
can not make me happy. After the departure of Seulhwa, I like forgotten how to
smile. On a winter day, I went to the place where she was buried. I got the
information about the funeral Seulhwa of Hyunrin and Nara. I went there to
bring a scarf that she made, as well as the music box. Do not forget I brought
her a flower. No, not the flower-themed death. I bring her a red rose.
“I had finished
knitting,” the word I spoke on a tombstone, “although not as good as I knit you
knitted ...”
I continue further conversation on the tombstone where the
name "Seul Ki Hwa" written, “I brought roses for you,”. I put a rose
in front of her tombstone.
I play a song on the jukebox and let it light up until the
song ends. I cried during the song was played. I still remember how sad Seulhwa
when I first gave it to her the music box in the school corridor.
I still remember how I entered the wrong room.
I still remember how I first spoke to her.
I still remember how she came to the room Yaesom with sad
faces and the music box.
I still remember how she got out of the room Yaesom. A few
hours before the operation.
I remember every second I spend with her, she never waste my
time.
If she had not had the operation, she might still be alive
for a few days longer. I'm sure.
But it was all over. I'm right here, in front of the place
where Seulhwa are. She was in a fit.
I cried uncontrollably. I do not think I would like this to
her who accidentally knew.
If only I did not want to accompany Yaesom in the hospital,
if it were not Yaesom room next to the room Seulhwa, if only I was never one
false to enter the room, I will never get a more valuable lesson from this.
That I should be nice and try to make everyone happy,
whatever the case.
Suddenly, when I was crying, it was snowing beautifully. I
felt a little relieved, because I could felt the snow fall with Seulhwa,
although she did not actually being with me.
